UNICEF warning that the policy of distributing infant formula free to all infants as part of Iraq’s Public Distribution System (PDS) for food rations could lead to potential disaster and that breastfeeding should be supported and encouraged. Roger Wright UNICEF rep for Iraq says that “Dehydration resulting from diarrhoea caused by contaminated water and poor sanitation is already Iraq’s biggest killer of young children,” he said. “In an unhygienic environment worsened by displacement and violence, exclusive breastfeeding is the best protection that can be given to Iraqi babies.” Already twice seasonal levels of diarrhoea.
