The nutrition situation in Dadaab refugee camps had remained precarious over the past few years,
however, in 2010 the prevalence levels of acute malnutrition fell below the WHO critical threshold of
15%. The situation changed dramatically with the rapid influx of refugees from southern
Somalia escaping famine due to drought and conflict. Several rapid assessments conducted in the
camp outskirts occupied by the new arrivals in June-July 2011 showed a very high prevalence of acute
malnutrition that were similar to those being reported in Somalia (> 30% GAM and >10% SAM among
children aged 6-59 months).
